“Man Sentenced to 7 Years for Raping 17-Year-Old in West Cork”

A man, identified as Kyle Hayes Condon, 25, residing in Pairc an Tobair, Clonakilty, Co Cork, has been sentenced for raping a 17-year-old student whom he forcibly took to a secluded grassy area in West Cork. Condon faced charges of rape, sexual assault, assault causing harm, and false imprisonment to which he pleaded guilty. The case was presided over by the Central Criminal Court in Cork where sentencing took place.

The incident, as detailed by Det Garda Lisa O’Sullivan, occurred in the early hours of February 16 when the victim was walking home after getting a lift from a party. Hayes Condon began following her, engaging her in conversation. The victim, in an attempt to gather evidence, recorded a Snapchat message capturing the perpetrator’s voice during their interaction.

It was revealed that Hayes Condon, under the influence of a significant amount of cocaine that night, offered the victim drugs before physically assaulting her. Despite her pleas, he proceeded to rape her, instilling fear in the young girl who believed her life was in danger during the ordeal.

Upon release by the perpetrator after twenty minutes, the victim rushed home and disclosed the harrowing incident to her parents. She was then examined at a Sexual Assault Treatment Unit, and the authorities were informed. In a victim impact statement, the traumatized girl expressed the emotional and physical toll the assault had taken on her, affecting her daily life and sense of safety.

Despite expressing deep remorse, Hayes Condon’s actions were deemed serious by the court. However, mitigating factors such as his admission of guilt, immediate acceptance of responsibility, and remorse were acknowledged. Consequently, he was sentenced to seven years in prison, with the final year suspended. Additionally, a restriction on contacting the victim for 40 years post-release was imposed, effectively indefinitely.
