The Manitoba government has announced enhanced measures to safeguard livestock producers against theft and fraud by introducing a dedicated RCMP officer and investigation unit. Funding will be allocated to the RCMP to appoint a specialized officer tasked with safeguarding cattle and other livestock as part of a Manitoba-based livestock inspection program. This move comes in response to calls from beef producers in the province for additional support in protecting livestock. The program in Manitoba is inspired by similar initiatives in Alberta and Saskatchewan.
According to the RCMP, there have been 57 reported incidents of theft and fraud within Manitoba’s cattle industry from 2021 to 2025. These cases not only result in financial losses and disruptions for those affected but also erode trust among lenders, investors, and buyers in the industry. RCMP investigators will collaborate with producers and law enforcement agencies to enforce provincial and federal livestock regulations, aiming to deter cattle theft and fraud.
Premier Wab Kinew is set to unveil the new position during an annual luncheon with members of the beef industry at the legislature.
