Maya Turner Makes History as First Female Captain in Manitoba Bisons Football

Maya Turner continues to make significant strides in Canadian university football history. As a placekicker and punter for the Manitoba Bisons, she made history by becoming the first woman to score in a U Sports football pre-season game in 2022. Now, Turner has achieved another milestone by becoming the inaugural female captain in the century-long legacy of the Bisons football program.

Expressing her gratitude, Turner stated, “It’s a tremendous honor that they hold me in such high regard, recognizing me not just as a player but also as a leader on the team, irrespective of gender.” Following the culmination of the training camp, the 24-year-old was appointed as one of the team’s seven captains, representing various positions.

Head coach Stan Pierre revealed the captaincy selections to the team, with Turner expressing her slight surprise at being included. Pierre emphasized Turner’s outstanding qualities, stating, “Maya epitomizes a student-athlete, excelling in all aspects of her duties at a superior level. She exemplifies dedication, hard work, and integrity, making her an ideal mentor and leader within our football team.”

Turner’s appointment as the specialist captain for her senior year was a natural choice for Pierre, who described her as an exceptional player without any gender distinctions. Turner’s groundbreaking achievements include being the first woman to play and score in a regular-season U Sports football game, setting a notable 21-yard field goal as the game-winner in double overtime.

Her consistent performance is evidenced by a 79% accuracy rate in the previous season, ranking third in Bison football’s long history. Notably, Turner’s successful 48-yard field goal placed her among the top performers in the nation, showcasing her exceptional skills on the field. In addition, she led the Canada West conference in field goal percentage in 2024 and was honored as a Canada West all-star, marking another significant milestone for women in U Sports football.

Hailing from Maple Grove, Minnesota, Turner transitioned from playing soccer at Loyola University in Chicago to pursuing a career as a kicker. Her relentless determination and talent led her to join the Bisons after impressing during a tryout. Turner emphasized the team’s support and recognition of her as a football player first, appreciating the inclusive environment fostered by her teammates and coaches.

While Turner’s gender has brought attention to her accomplishments, Pierre hopes that her success will pave the way for more opportunities for female athletes in the future, acknowledging the existing gender barriers in sports. He commended Turner for her exceptional abilities and contributions to the team, emphasizing the importance of recognizing her as a skilled athlete above all else.

As Turner continues to make history and inspire others, her journey exemplifies perseverance, talent, and dedication in breaking down barriers for women in sports.
