Meet Alex Lawson: Ottawa’s Mayoral Candidate with a Unique Journey

In recent months, the individuals contending for the position of Ottawa’s next mayor have been presenting their campaign agendas. Today, we delve into the background of one of the candidates: Alex Lawson.

Alex Lawson leads a bustling life. He is the proprietor of a construction business, a dedicated volunteer, and a father to three daughters. Currently, he is campaigning to become Ottawa’s next mayor.

When asked about his leisure activities, Lawson mentions his rural property in Dunrobin. However, even in his downtime, he finds himself engaged in various tasks.

“There’s always something to be done there, whether it’s constructing a new chicken coop, tending to acres of grass, or enjoying a walk in the woods with my daughters and dog,” he expressed.

While there are occasional moments of relaxation, Lawson shared that board games have become a popular pastime in his household, with titles like Life and Labyrinth currently topping the list. Yet, he admits to not having specific favorites in various aspects of life.

He finds it challenging to pinpoint a preferred musician, book, or historical figure. “It’s hard for me to narrow down favorites. I tend to remain open to new experiences and perspectives,” he explained.

His half-brother and campaign manager, Emrys Graefe, attributes this to “class disparity.”

“Unlike conventional politicians who have followed the standard academic and white-collar leisure paths, this individual tirelessly works, with his leisure moments often involving playing board games with his children,” Graefe remarked.

Class distinctions have been a recurring theme in Lawson’s personal narrative. While he celebrates witnessing his daughters’ growth, such as outgrowing clothes, these moments also evoke memories of his mother’s struggles.

Recalling his childhood experiences of relying on The Snowsuit Fund and local food banks in his upbringing, Lawson emphasized the impact it had on him, instilling a sense of responsibility and a drive to give back to the community.

“This sense of obligation to my community is a significant motivator for my candidacy. I feel a duty to repay the help I received,” he stated.

Challenges at Ridgemont High

Throughout his campaign, 38-year-old Lawson has highlighted his diverse experiences and roles, signaling a journey of personal growth and evolution.

During an in-depth interview at his campaign headquarters in Chinatown, Lawson reflected on his upbringing and early challenges, including instances of social and economic struggles.

He recollected pivotal moments from his past, such as an incident in his youth when he encountered theft, shaping his resilience and outlook on life.

Transitioning to Ridgemont High School, Lawson found direction in a construction technology class, leading him on a trajectory from a tradesman to a successful business owner and now a mayoral aspirant.

“Discovering my passion for construction through practical experiences in high school set me on a definitive path towards entrepreneurship and civic engagement,” Lawson shared.
