A mother who initially dismissed a blemish on her chest as a mere pimple was shocked to receive a diagnosis of an aggressive form of cancer. Rebecca Turner, aged 46, underwent surgery to remove part of her lung following a medical examination of a pale skin patch and red lump on the upper right side of her chest. Initially mistaking the 1cm lump for a harmless spot, she grew increasingly worried as it darkened, changed color, and became itchy.
Upon learning that she had nodular melanoma, a severe type of skin cancer, Rebecca, a mother of one, feared the worst. Reflecting on her experience, she emphasized the misunderstanding surrounding melanoma, noting that many believe it can be easily treated by removal, which is not the case. Rebecca, who occasionally used sunbeds in her 20s, now advocates for banning them, highlighting the lack of awareness and education on skin cancer.
Since her diagnosis in June 2022, the resident of Barry, south Wales, has undergone three surgeries to eliminate affected skin and lymph nodes. Initially on a “watch and wait” approach, Rebecca later discovered in July of the same year that her cancer had progressed to stage four and spread to her lungs. Recounting her diagnosis, she expressed overwhelming devastation and anxiety, trying to shield her emotions from her daughter while grappling with the grim reality of her situation.
Despite multiple surgeries, doctors observed that the lump had grown significantly by July, leading to the confirmation of stage four metastatic melanoma. Melanoma, a type of skin cancer, is primarily caused by exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun and artificial sources like sunbeds. Rebecca passionately advocates for banning sunbeds in the UK, citing her prior misconceptions about their safety and their detrimental effects on skin health.
