Skin cancer awareness is being taken on the road throughout Canada this summer. The Mole Mobile, in collaboration with the Canadian Dermatology Association, is providing complimentary skin cancer screenings by dermatologists in Thunder Bay this week as part of a journey spanning from May to October.
Dr. Mark Kirchhof, a dermatologist traveling with the Mole Mobile, highlighted the shortage of dermatologists in Canada compared to the population worldwide, leading to extended wait times for appointments. He emphasized the importance of the mobile service in reaching communities with limited healthcare access, recounting cases where individuals without regular medical care were able to detect and address skin cancer thanks to the screenings.
Kirchhof noted an increase in skin cancer rates in Canada, particularly among the baby boomer demographic who were exposed to significant sun exposure in their youth. The Mole Mobile, currently stationed in Thunder Bay, is one of two units touring the country. It is stationed at the County Fair Plaza and will relocate to the Arthur Street Marketplace on the following day, operating from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
One individual, Chris Hack Peterson, praised the initiative, stressing the importance of early cancer detection. Following Thunder Bay, the Mole Mobile will visit Parry Sound on Sept. 4, North Bay on Sept. 5, and Sudbury on Sept. 6.
