Members of the Legislative Assembly of a territory in N.W.T. are currently holding public meetings across the region to gather input on the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods act (SCAN) put forth by the government.
The series of meetings commenced in Fort Good Hope on Monday, providing an opportunity for residents to inquire about the act aimed at addressing the ongoing drug crisis. While many community members expressed overall support for the act, they also sought further clarification and details, particularly regarding the language used in the legislation.
Beyond the specific provisions of the SCAN Act, residents raised additional concerns related to drug issues that the act does not cover. The proposed legislation, which is still pending approval by the N.W.T. government, would empower territorial officials to investigate properties suspected of illegal activities based on confidential complaints from the public. It would also enable a team of officers to handle complaints and take actions that could result in tenancy terminations and evictions.
In addition to discussing the SCAN Act, residents highlighted the urgent need for more support mechanisms for individuals struggling with addiction and prevention programs for vulnerable populations like youth. For instance, community members emphasized the importance of providing more recreational activities for youth to keep them engaged and away from harmful substances like drugs.
While acknowledging the importance of the SCAN legislation, some residents, like Karen Caesar, emphasized the immediate need for comprehensive support for those battling addiction. Caesar, who tragically lost her son to the drug crisis, emotionally shared her personal experience during the meeting, illustrating the devastating impact of drug-related issues on families and communities.
Residents also brought up other community priorities such as enhancing highway security, increasing police presence, and improving access to healthcare services. These concerns highlighted the broader societal challenges that go beyond the scope of the SCAN Act. The next public meeting is scheduled to take place in Fort McPherson on Tuesday.
