“N.W.T. Leaders Push for Federal Support in Sustainable Development”

Leaders from the Northwest Territories gathered in Ottawa to advocate for federal support in key areas such as infrastructure, transportation, and renewable energy. The N.W.T. Council of Leaders, comprising territorial officials and Indigenous representatives, emphasized the need for backing major Indigenous-led projects. These projects include the Tłı̨chǫ and Yellowknives Dene-led Arctic Economic and Security Corridor, the extension of the Mackenzie Valley Highway to Inuvik, the Taltson Hydro Expansion, and the Inuvialuit Energy Security Program.

With the impending closure of major diamond mines like Ekati, Diavik, and Gahcho Kué, which have been vital to the local economy, the leaders underscored the importance of transitioning to new sustainable economic avenues. N.W.T. Métis Nation President Garry Bailey highlighted the necessity of finding alternative means for economic sustainability.

Territorial leaders pointed out the historical lack of federal investment in the North, hindering economic progress. They stressed the importance of collaborative decision-making in developing new industries. Tłı̨chǫ Grand Chief Jackson Lafferty emphasized that Indigenous leadership and partnership are already driving initiatives across the territory.

The leaders reiterated the need for infrastructure development to address social challenges like high living costs, housing shortages, and healthcare expenses. They emphasized the necessity of long-term funding commitments to ensure project completion and urged Ottawa to maintain its support.
