The Newfoundland Regiment Hockey Club has returned to the ice in the Avalon Peninsula and is getting ready for their upcoming season by touring various locations in Newfoundland. Their first practice session, open to fans, took place at the Jack Byrne Arena in Torbay, allowing supporters to catch a glimpse of familiar and new faces ahead of the new season.
Eight-year-old fan Cameron Duke expressed his excitement for the team and upcoming games. The Regiment aims to capitalize on their previous season’s success in the Quebec-Maritimes Junior Hockey League Eastern Conference, where they secured a third-place finish but were eliminated in the playoffs by the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada.
Head coach and general manager Gordie Dwyer is optimistic about the team’s progress and looks forward to the development of players during training camp. The team kicked off the training camp in Summerside, P.E.I., focusing on identifying key players who will enhance the team’s performance, especially younger talents.
Player Ben Veitch shared his enthusiasm for playing in front of Regiment fans after a productive summer that included winning Gold at the 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup with teammates Quinn Norman and Matthew Smith. Veitch sees this experience as a confidence booster and is eager to contribute to the team’s success in the upcoming season.
Newcomer William Lundqvist, an 18-year-old defenseman from Stockholm, Sweden, is eager to immerse himself in Newfoundland’s hockey culture and play in front of the passionate fans. The team is gearing up for their first game on Sept. 18 and will travel across Newfoundland to play three preseason matches against the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League.
The preseason games are scheduled for Aug. 28 in Gander, Aug. 29 in Grand Falls-Windsor, and Aug. 31 in Corner Brook, building anticipation for the official start of the season. The team’s journey includes engaging with fans and preparing for an exciting season ahead.
