NHL prospect Matthew Mayich, originally from Hamilton and a former player for the Ottawa 67’s in junior hockey, is currently hospitalized in Arizona due to an incident during off-ice training, as confirmed by the Ontario Hockey League.
Mayich, aged 21, was drafted by the St. Louis Blues as a defenseman in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL draft. His player profile indicates he participated in minor hockey with the Hamilton Huskies from 2016 to 2020 before joining the 67’s.
According to the OHL, reports suggest that Mayich was admitted to the hospital on August 20 while preparing for the upcoming 2026-27 season in Arizona.
The St. Louis Blues have expressed their support and prayers for Mayich’s recovery. Doug Armstrong, the Blues’ president of hockey operations, stated that the organization is closely monitoring Mayich’s condition and praying for his well-being as he receives medical care in Arizona. Armstrong also extended the team’s deepest sympathies to Mayich’s family, friends, and teammates during this challenging period.
OHL commissioner Bryan Crawford echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the league’s support for Matthew, his parents John and Christina, and the entire Mayich family. Crawford highlighted Mayich’s contributions during his four seasons in the league, acknowledging his positive impact on and off the ice.
The Hamilton Steel Hockey Club, formerly known as the Huskies, previously celebrated Mayich’s milestones, including his signing with the 67’s in 2021 and his selection by the Blues in 2023. The Huskies noted that Mayich had been part of their organization since the age of nine.
