Niagara candidates running in the upcoming Ontario municipal elections are undergoing a survey regarding their stances on race-related subjects identified as essential by the Niagara Region Anti-Racism Association. This marks the association’s inaugural survey of municipal candidates, with outreach extended to numerous individuals competing for positions on city and town councils, as well as school board trustees. Trustee candidates are specifically being questioned about their perspectives on the disclosure of race-related data concerning suspensions.
Saleh Waziruddin, a member of the association’s executive committee, emphasized the importance of transparency from candidates regarding their views on racism before the Oct. 26 election, citing instances such as the resignation of former regional chair Bob Gale due to his possession of a signed copy of Adolf Hitler’s manifesto, “Mein Kampf,” and the surge in activity by white supremacist groups in Niagara.
Waziruddin expressed concern over the lack of criticism from many Niagara politicians towards Gale’s ownership of the controversial book, underscoring the need for candidates to address race-related issues publicly. The survey delves into various topics, including condemning Gale’s actions, denouncing white supremacist groups, and supporting marginalized communities like the Kashechewan evacuees.
Moreover, the survey probes candidates on their stance regarding the Niagara Regional Police Service’s use of force data, particularly highlighting the disproportionately high incidents involving Black individuals. Candidates are asked about their willingness to address systemic racism within the police force and demand accountability from law enforcement.
The association intends to publish all candidate responses by Sept. 30, providing transparency to the public ahead of the election. The survey results received thus far are already accessible on the association’s website, with ongoing efforts to gather and share candidate viewpoints on critical race-related issues in Niagara.
