“North Shore Residents Speak Out Ahead of Election”

The North Shore of Quebec offers a unique blend of landscapes, with dense boreal forests juxtaposed against white sandy beaches. The region is characterized by a mix of small fishing villages and bustling industrial cities, influencing diverse perspectives on issues such as English-language rights and healthcare accessibility. In anticipation of the upcoming election, CBC’s Voters’ Voice initiative engaged with residents of the area to gather their insights.

Stephen Kohner, a long-time resident of Baie-Comeau and retired educator, expressed his frustration with politicians focusing on trivial matters instead of concrete plans, particularly in areas like immigration and language policies. He emphasized the need for a shift in political attitudes to better serve the community, especially in addressing healthcare challenges, such as residents having to travel long distances for essential medical treatments.

On the Lower North Shore, Priscilla Fequet Griffin voiced concerns about the treatment of English-speaking Quebecers, feeling marginalized and undervalued in the ongoing language discourse. She highlighted the importance of mutual respect and equal rights for all individuals, regardless of language or cultural background.

Alicia Buffitt, a youth project coordinator in Sept-Îles, emphasized the significance of housing, cost of living, and language rights for the region’s young population. She highlighted the impact of language laws on population retention and access to essential services, underscoring the need for policies that support the linguistic diversity of the community.

Marie-Michèle Cyr, a hairstylist in Sept-Îles, highlighted the challenges faced by residents in accessing services and affordable housing, exacerbated by the region’s geographical isolation. She emphasized the need for improved infrastructure and transportation options to better connect the North Shore with the rest of the province.

Dr. Jean-Sébastien Otis, an emergency room physician, raised concerns about the government’s approach to healthcare delivery, particularly in the recruitment and retention of family doctors in the region. He emphasized the importance of building a trusting relationship with healthcare professionals to ensure quality care for residents of the North Shore.
