“Northern Community Libraries Foster Connection Beyond Books”

The Kedgwick Public Library, though small in size at 200 square meters, has a significant impact on the northern community located approximately 80 kilometers southwest of Campbellton. More than just a place to borrow books, it serves as a hub for various community activities, including a children’s garden, a community kitchen, and clubs for seniors, acting as a cohesive force within the community.

Diane Thompson, the library manager with 17 years of experience, highlighted the diverse offerings available at the library, ranging from puzzles and games to skateboards and even fishing equipment for rental. Thompson expressed openness to residents’ ideas while also acknowledging the need for additional staff and a larger space to enhance the library’s services.

One of the library’s standout programs is the Eat Fresh initiative, which was initiated in response to a community member’s concern about food insecurity. With the help of 172 volunteers, the program raises funds to provide bags of fruits and vegetables to families in need. Flavien Dubé, who leads the program, emphasized the social aspect of the library, noting that it fosters connections beyond just being a place for books.

Additionally, the library engages schoolchildren through activities like tending a summer garden, where students learn about gardening and even sell produce to fund future projects. The library also serves as a social hub for seniors, offering a space for socialization and activities to combat isolation.

Similarly, the Raymond Lagacé Library in Atholville, managed by Kevin Soussana, provides tools, musical instruments, and community space. Soussana aims to bridge different groups through various events, such as bringing students from different backgrounds together for collaborative activities.

Both Thompson and Soussana emphasize the need for expanded space and more staff to support the wide range of activities offered at their respective libraries. Despite the challenges, they remain dedicated to serving their communities and advocating for increased support and resources.

In conclusion, the small libraries in Kedgwick and Atholville play vital roles in fostering community connections and providing valuable services beyond traditional book lending, showcasing the importance of these inclusive spaces in northern communities.
