“Northwest Territories Improves Lab Services for Patients”

The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA) has recently implemented modifications to outpatient lab services to enhance patient access and flexibility. The Stanton Territorial Hospital outpatient lab now operates from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, providing an additional 4.5 hours daily and accommodating 38 extra appointments per day.

In response to feedback from residents indicating limited appointment availability, NTHSSA introduced these changes to better align services with patient needs and offer a more relaxed experience. Jennifer Daley, NTHSSA’s director of lab services, highlighted the importance of adapting to meet client demands during an interview with Shannon Scott on CBC’s The Trailbreaker.

Before the changes, wait times for appointments were as long as 21 calendar days. However, with the extended hours and the introduction of an online booking system, NTHSSA expects a reduction in wait times. Early data suggests a high utilization of extended hours and a decrease in no-shows due to automated notifications through the online system.

The online booking system allows patients to select appointment types based on their needs, such as general blood draws or ECG procedures. For those who prefer not to use the online system, options include calling the provided telephone number or filling out a call back request form for assistance.

Overall, the goal of these changes is to streamline lab services, reduce wait times, and enhance patient experience in Yellowknife.
