“Northwestern Ontario Battles 84 Active Wildfires”

Northwestern Ontario currently faces 84 active wildfires as per the most recent report released by Ontario’s Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) on Sunday evening. Among these, seven wildfires are not contained, six are being managed, nine are under control, and the rest are under observation.

As of Sunday evening, no new fires have been reported in the northwest region since the previous update on Friday. Cooler temperatures and expected precipitation on Saturday were anticipated to assist in reducing the intensity of some major fires in the area.

The forest fire risk is predominantly low in northwestern Ontario, with pockets of moderate hazard near Kenora, Marten Falls First Nation, and areas north of Lake Nipigon in the Thunder Bay fire management district.

Notable fires in the region include the Rinker Complex comprising Thunder Bay 36, Dryden 34, and Dryden 35, which collectively cover a significant area and remain uncontrolled. Evacuation orders are in place for the affected regions, with firefighting efforts aided by favorable weather conditions.

The Atikokan Cluster, including Fort Frances 13, 14, and 15, faces varying levels of containment, with additional firefighting resources deployed to manage the situation. Approximately 829 individuals are displaced due to the wildfires in Ontario, with some evacuees returning home.

Evacuation alerts are active for Fort Frances 39 and Minnesota’s “Thumb Fire,” urging residents to be prepared for potential evacuation. Highway closures are in effect in certain areas, and mail delivery services have been suspended in communities affected by the wildfires.

In the northeastern region, two new fires were reported, with ongoing monitoring of 45 active fires. Efforts to combat the wildfires include increased funding for firefighting resources and personnel, along with support for affected communities and individuals.

The response to the wildfires includes the provision of essential supplies and equipment to impacted areas, as well as collaborative efforts with various organizations to address the challenges posed by the ongoing wildfire situation.
