“Nursery Worker Sentenced to 10 Years for Child Abuse”

A teenager working at a nursery was sentenced to 10 years in prison for sexually abusing children as young as three. Thomas Waller, now 18, from Surrey, committed multiple offenses in 2024, including rape and taking indecent images. The court heard that Waller gained the trust of two boys shortly after starting to care for them and then exploited them.

One of the boys’ fathers described the impact on his son as traumatic. Judge Claire Harden-Frost expressed sadness at the parents feeling responsible for the situation. The mother of one victim characterized Waller as dangerous and calculated, emphasizing the frightening aspect of his actions at a young age.

The mother reported that her toddler disclosed being sexually assaulted at the nursery. Following the disclosure, the nursery promptly reported the incident to the police, resulting in Waller’s arrest on the same day. The nursery, which remains unnamed, expressed deep shock and sorrow over the actions of its former staff member. They highlighted their immediate actions upon learning of the incident and their commitment to enhancing safeguarding measures.

After his conviction, the CPS barrister recommended a lengthy sentence for Waller, emphasizing the seriousness of the offenses. Surrey County Council’s representative expressed dismay over the crimes and offered support to the affected families. The council stressed the importance of safeguarding children and encouraged reporting any concerns about individuals working with children.

This development underscores the critical need for vigilance in child protection.
