After facing closure due to financial issues, the Nutrien Civic Centre in Sussex will be back in operation on Friday, just six days following its temporary shutdown. Stefanie McFarlane, the executive director, confirmed that the Kings Regional Service Commission provided the centre with a cheque to cover its funding commitment until the end of August. Previously, the commission had withheld a larger quarterly payment, leading to payroll challenges and the subsequent closure.
Originally planning to remain closed until a sustainable funding solution was secured, McFarlane had a change of heart during the closure period. A significant factor in the decision to reopen was the center’s program in partnership with the Salvation Army, offering showers to individuals experiencing homelessness. A poignant encounter with someone in need of a shower compelled McFarlane to advocate for the center’s reopening, emphasizing the importance of providing essential services to the community.
Despite the reopening, McFarlane emphasized that efforts to establish long-term financial stability are ongoing. The center’s staff and board have been actively exploring avenues to increase revenue without relying on additional funding from municipal taxpayers. Concerns have been raised by some member municipalities, including Valley Waters and Butternut Valley, regarding the fairness of payment calculations and the financial management of the center. Valley Waters Mayor Randy McKnight expressed apprehensions about repeated deficits, accumulated debt, and the absence of a comprehensive capital plan for the facility. McFarlane acknowledged the challenges but highlighted the center’s operational improvements over the years, emphasizing its role in attracting visitors to the region.
