Ohio Gubernatorial Candidate’s Campaign Sparks Controversy

Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy’s team has officially acknowledged creating a contentious advertisement featuring the estranged mother of his Democratic rival in Ohio’s gubernatorial race. Despite bipartisan criticism for bringing up Amy Acton’s painful past, the campaign plans to invest $4 million US to promote the ad. This move adds a deeply personal dimension to one of the nation’s closely watched and costly state election campaigns. The advertisement, first revealed by the political blog The Rooster, presents Acton’s birth mother, Donna Arthur, labeling her “a liar” and hinting at mental health issues. Donna lost custody of her children after her stepfather was charged with raping Acton in 1978. Acton, a former Ohio public health director, has openly discussed her childhood struggles with homelessness and abuse. The ad’s origins were initially unclear as it circulated online without the required “paid for” tag for television airing, prompting questions about accountability. Ramaswamy’s campaign spokesperson clarified that Acton’s mother was not paid for the video, which will be distributed online and on TV. Despite initial ambiguity about the ad’s source, high-profile Republicans, including Donald Trump Jr. and influencer Laura Loomer, supported it, while others, including Democrats and political figures like Meghan McCain, criticized it. Philip Stearns, Acton’s brother, released a statement condemning the ad and expressing support for his sister. The Columbus Dispatch editorial, endorsing Acton for governor, denounced the ad as “revolting and unsettling.” Ramaswamy, a biotech billionaire, endorsed Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential race and previously served in a federal government inefficiencies task force led by Trump and Elon Musk. He resigned from the task force to focus on his gubernatorial candidacy. With over 676,000 early votes cast in Ohio, the impact of this ad on the election remains a subject of intense scrutiny as the race nears its conclusion.
