As the new school year approaches, Oromocto High School in New Brunswick is set to kick off the term with a cellphone-free initiative. Principal Molly Nugent aims to establish consistency within the school environment and enhance the focus on learning and social interactions through the new cellphone policy.
Having been a vice-principal at the school for six years, Nugent revealed that discussions regarding the cellphone policy have been ongoing for the past three years. Previously, teachers had the discretion to permit cellphone use for academic purposes, but the lack of uniformity prompted the school to implement a more structured approach.
Under the new pilot policy at Oromocto High, students will be required to power off their phones and personal devices at the start of the school day and keep them stowed away. Cellphone usage will be prohibited during class sessions and transitions between classes, although students can use their phones during lunch breaks. Additionally, connecting to the school’s Wi-Fi network with personal devices will not be allowed, except for specific medical or accessibility needs like diabetes management.
Principal Nugent emphasized the importance of minimizing distractions caused by cellphone usage during school hours, citing concerns such as unauthorized photography and sharing of images without consent. The policy development involved input from staff members initially, followed by a parental survey in June to gather feedback for shaping the final policy.
While Oromocto High is not the first school in New Brunswick to implement a cellphone ban, the move aligns with the broader provincial guidance outlined in Policy 311, restricting cellphone use during class time to educational purposes at the discretion of teachers. By sharing the stricter policy with parents well in advance, the school aims to prepare students for the upcoming changes, acknowledging the potential challenges in enforcement.
Looking ahead, administrators plan to assess the policy’s impact through ongoing feedback from students, parents, and teachers throughout the academic year. The ultimate objective is to create a conducive learning environment that encourages student engagement and interpersonal connections, while providing a temporary break from constant phone usage to promote a focused and interactive school experience.
