“Ottawa Mayoral Candidates Spar Over Bike Lane Funding”

In Ottawa’s mayoral race, incumbent mayor Mark Sutcliffe and challenger Neil Saravanamuttoo engaged in heated exchanges this week over a dated proposal to allocate millions of dollars for bike lanes. Sutcliffe brought up a 2022 bike lane plan that Saravanamuttoo had a hand in developing during his tenure as an economic advisor to former mayoral candidate Catherine McKenney. The plan was part of McKenney’s unsuccessful mayoral campaign that year.

Sutcliffe criticized Saravanamuttoo in a social media post, claiming that Saravanamuttoo supported a $250 million investment in bike lanes while suggesting it would cost taxpayers nothing. Sutcliffe questioned the transparency of Saravanamuttoo’s financial commitments to Ottawa residents. Saravanamuttoo responded during a CTV Ottawa debate, clarifying that the 2022 bike plan was a past initiative and not part of his current mayoral campaign platform.

Saravanamuttoo took to social media to refute Sutcliffe’s accusations, labeling them as intentionally misleading. He emphasized that he does not have a similar plan in his current mayoral agenda. The candidates continued their dispute in a debate hosted by the Ottawa East Community Association, where Saravanamuttoo challenged Sutcliffe’s claims and accused him of deceptive practices.

The controversy stems from Sutcliffe’s use of the $250 million bike lane proposal as a divisive issue during the 2022 election campaign with McKenney. Saravanamuttoo recently explained his role in devising the financing strategy for McKenney’s bold plan, aiming to rapidly expand Ottawa’s cycling infrastructure. McKenney’s proposal involved leveraging a green bond to borrow $250 million, with the debt serviced using the city’s existing annual cycling infrastructure budget.

This clash over the bike lane proposal underscores the ongoing tension between the mayoral candidates as they vie for support in the upcoming election.
