“Over 11K in Sudbury Vote Early for Oct. Elections”

About 11,400 individuals in Greater Sudbury, Ontario, have already participated in early voting ahead of the upcoming municipal and school board elections scheduled for October 26. The residents of the northern Ontario city have the choice to vote either online or in person at various accessible locations open to all registered voters.

The early online voting commenced on October 16, followed by the availability of advance polling stations on October 17, with additional voting opportunities on October 24. Eric Labelle, the city’s solicitor and clerk, remarked on the positive turnout during the advanced voting sessions, noting the enthusiasm among voters.

While the early voting process has been running smoothly, Labelle mentioned that the city’s 311 service has been inundated with inquiries regarding the accuracy of the voter list. Some residents reported not receiving their voter card by mail or receiving cards intended for individuals no longer residing at their address.

Labelle emphasized the convenience and simplicity of online voting appreciated by residents but acknowledged the imperfections in the voters list currently managed by Elections Ontario. He reassured individuals without a voter information card that they could still vote in person at any polling location by presenting valid photo identification.

In the previous municipal election in 2022, only 42% of registered voters in Sudbury participated. Alison Tate, a Sudbury resident, expressed her proactive approach by voting early, emphasizing the importance of participation. She highlighted the growing interest in voting among younger individuals, attributing it to the convenience of online voting.

Conversely, Phil Brulé revealed his decision not to vote, citing skepticism about the impact of elected officials on the city due to systemic issues within the political framework. Brulé’s perspective resonated with the low voter turnout in the region, indicating a sentiment shared by many who feel disconnected from the candidates and the electoral process.
