The provincial government of Prince Edward Island has introduced a new branding initiative named P.E.I. Creates to promote local artwork. Michelle MacCallum, the director of cultural development at Innovation P.E.I., expressed that creating this brand was a necessary step after witnessing the abundance of artistic projects supported by the government without a cohesive narrative to showcase them effectively.
The branding, represented by a unique logo, aims to unify the diverse efforts of Island creators under one recognizable banner. Crafted by local artists from One Stone Studio & Design, the logo features “sea glass-like silhouettes” that symbolize the distinct geographical elements of P.E.I., such as its red soil, green fields, and blue waters.
Jenn Redmond, the minister of economic development, trade, and artificial intelligence, highlighted that P.E.I. Creates will serve as a unified platform to elevate and showcase the exceptional talent and creativity present in the region. This initiative is seen as an opportunity to enhance Prince Edward Island’s competitive edge in various creative fields like television, film, and music.
MacCallum emphasized that the branding has been integrated across various creative mediums, including art installations, film credits, and music albums. By establishing P.E.I. Creates as a recognizable brand, the aim is to attract attention from individuals outside the province and generate interest in the flourishing artistic scene of P.E.I.
According to a report by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, the arts and culture sector in Prince Edward Island contributed $305 million to the GDP in 2023, showcasing substantial growth potential in the region. MacCallum believes that P.E.I. Creates will play a crucial role in enhancing the perception of the Island’s creative industry and highlighting its dynamic and versatile work to a broader audience.
Under the P.E.I. Creates umbrella, the province will also host the P.E.I. Arts Awards ceremony scheduled for November, with nominations open until October 5th. This event aims to recognize and celebrate the outstanding contributions of artists and creators in Prince Edward Island.
