“P.E.I. Restorative Justice Initiative Thrives, Empowering Victims”

Prince Edward Island has successfully run its restorative justice initiative for five years, assisting over 600 individuals. Launched in July 2021, this program offers an alternative approach to traditional legal processes by focusing on addressing the harm caused by criminal activities.

Typically, the program involves a meeting facilitated by trained individuals between the offender and the victim to discuss the offense, its impact, and potential ways for the offender to make amends. Bethany Knox, the Justice Initiatives Manager at P.E.I.’s Department of Justice and Public Safety, highlighted that many participants express regret for not knowing about restorative justice earlier.

Knox emphasized that the program provides victims with a voice to confront those who have harmed them directly, fostering clarity and understanding. She noted that traditional justice systems often overlook the needs and impacts on victims, while restorative justice can be transformative for both victims and offenders.

While cases are referred to the program, some individuals choose not to participate, and others may not meet the eligibility criteria. According to Knox, the conventional justice system offers limited opportunities for victims to share their experiences, unlike restorative justice, which can facilitate healing and repair damaged relationships.

Jillian Kilfoil, the Executive Director of the P.E.I. Rape and Sexual Assault Centre, expressed support for community-focused solutions like the restorative justice program. She highlighted the diverse needs of survivors and the importance of offering varied pathways to justice, especially in cases where the offender is someone close to the victim.

Kilfoil stressed the significance of involving the community in addressing harm and rebuilding relationships through the restorative justice process. The program aims to empower victims, survivors, and offenders by centering their needs and voices in the pursuit of healing and accountability.

Primarily handling assault cases, the restorative justice program also addresses theft and mischief offenses, aiming to make offenders reflect on the impact of their actions and deter future criminal behavior. The program’s victim-centered approach prioritizes the needs and voices of those affected while ensuring that all participants’ requirements are considered in the process.
