Shepton Mallet Carnival came to a standstill for close to an hour when a participant fell off a float during the event. The incident occurred around 8:40 pm on Wednesday, November 12, as the procession was moving from Cannard’s Grave Road. Emergency services maneuvered through the crowd to reach the injured person, but the specific location of the accident along the route and the float involved remain undisclosed.
Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that the individual was promptly taken to the hospital after receiving initial treatment from officers and St John’s Ambulance team. Fortunately, the injuries sustained are reported to be non-life-threatening or life-altering, according to a police spokesperson. Spectators mentioned that the parade was paused for nearly an hour before resuming.
During the delay, the leading float, Newmarket Carnival Club’s Ghost Chickens, entertained the waiting crowd with music. By approximately 9:30 pm, the procession recommenced, lifting spirits among the spectators. Avon and Somerset Police provided a statement acknowledging the incident, assuring that the participant received medical attention before the procession resumed. The public and carnival participants were appreciated for their cooperation and patience during the interruption.
