“PEI Teachers’ Federation Calls for Action on School Behavior Issues”

The Prince Edward Island Teachers’ Federation presented four recommendations to Members of the Legislative Assembly on Thursday to tackle issues surrounding behavior and violence in public schools in the province. Federation president Andy Doran highlighted concerns such as disruptive behavior by students, self-harm, and the lack of support in some schools without behavior resource staff.

Doran stressed the importance of not leaving educators to handle crises alone and emphasized the need for additional assistance for students displaying challenging behaviors. He praised the effectiveness of behavior resource teachers in identifying and addressing issues before they escalate, leading to improved outcomes for students.

The federation’s suggestions to the government included increasing behavior resource personnel in schools, establishing learning centers within schools for student support, enhancing off-site alternative education programs, and appointing a dedicated principal for alternative education. Schools with behavior resource staff have reported reduced disruptions and positive changes in student attitudes.

In an interview following the committee meeting, Doran advocated for behavior resource teachers in every school, citing the evolving educational landscape. Green Party MLA Karla Bernard and PC MLA Susie Dillon expressed support for the federation’s proposals, emphasizing the importance of providing appropriate support to meet students’ diverse needs for a successful education.
