“Pope Leo Cleared of Further Treatment Post Lung Cancer Surgery”

Pope Leo’s medical team, in a statement from the Vatican on Wednesday, announced that he will not need additional treatment following his recent surgery for lung cancer. The doctors confirmed that the type of lung cancer diagnosed was pulmonary adenocarcinoma, a common form that has not spread beyond its initial location.

Lead surgeon Stefano Margaritora and personal physician Luigi Carbone stated that a comprehensive evaluation determined that no further therapy is necessary. Pope Leo made a public appearance at St. Peter’s Square, greeting supporters and conducting his first general audience since the surgery on October 13. He also delivered a sermon in Italian, with a slight change in protocol by offering brief greetings in seven languages instead of the usual nine.

Despite his upcoming planned trip to South America, including visits to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru from November 6 to 17, uncertainties remain about whether the trip will proceed as scheduled. However, the lead surgeon expressed confidence that Pope Leo’s health will allow him to embark on the journey, stating that there are no medical impediments to the visit.

The 71-year-old pontiff’s rigorous travel itinerary is anticipated to be one of the most extensive trips for a Catholic leader in recent memory, underscoring the significance and potential challenges of the upcoming visit.
