I extend warm New Year wishes to all readers of the Mirror. However you choose to celebrate, may it be a joyous occasion for you!
Looking back at 2025, it was a year filled with achievements to be proud of. From the Lionesses’ remarkable Euros victory to the Red Roses clinching the women’s Rugby World Cup, and Scotland’s remarkable World Cup qualification, there were many reasons to celebrate. Yet, for many, it remained a challenging year. I understand the dedication of Mirror readers and the desire for simple pleasures like dining out, going on holiday, or owning a new phone.
My message for the upcoming year is clear: in 2026, you will witness the changes we have promised. Expect improvements in your bills, communities, and public services. More police presence, closure of asylum hotels, new health centers in your area, and investments in community amenities like parks and youth clubs are on the horizon. Enhanced workers’ rights and improved living conditions, including a significant reduction in child poverty, are part of our commitment.
Recently, a poignant letter from a nine-year-old Scottish girl highlighted the harsh realities of child poverty. It’s sobering to realize that a large portion of impoverished children in Britain come from hardworking families struggling to make ends meet.
To combat this, we are taking steps to lift over half a million children out of poverty by eliminating the two-child limit on child benefit, expanding free school meal programs, and addressing the rising cost of living. Our focus on stabilizing the country’s finances enables us to support you economically, with initiatives like freezing rail fares, reducing energy bills, and boosting the national minimum wage.
Revitalizing our nation is a gradual process, but we are making progress in rebuilding a stronger Britain. Each positive change signifies a reversal of decline, a restoration of opportunity and pride, and a brighter future for families.
In the realm of politics, the concept of hope has been somewhat forgotten, but in 2026, we aim to reignite it. This year is poised to reveal the true essence of Britain, instilling confidence and optimism for the future.
