The government has allocated $8.7 million to bolster the life sciences and biomanufacturing industry in Prince Edward Island. This funding aims to address workforce challenges in a sector poised for continued expansion. The Canadian Alliance for Skills and Training in Life Sciences (CASTL) will receive the funds through Ottawa’s Sectoral Workforce Solutions Program. CASTL, which operates training facilities in Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and British Columbia, plays a crucial role in developing and enhancing the industry’s workforce.
During the announcement event, Charlottetown MP Sean Casey emphasized the importance of meeting the sector’s demands amidst global uncertainties. He highlighted that the funding is geared towards workforce development, considering the sector’s significance for the economy. Casey also pointed out the projected need for an additional 65,000 skilled workers in Canada’s biomanufacturing and biotech sector by 2029.
Penny Walsh, the CEO of CASTL, emphasized that the funding will support training initiatives for individuals entering or already employed in biomanufacturing. This includes providing training opportunities for post-secondary students and upskilling programs for current employees. Walsh described CASTL’s facilities as “simulated manufacturing plants,” enabling trainees to practice using equipment and mastering technical tasks in a highly regulated environment.
Rory Francis, former CEO of the P.E.I. BioAlliance and outgoing CASTL board chair, highlighted how the success of CASTL on a national scale benefits the local economy in Prince Edward Island. He emphasized the importance of having a training facility within the province, not only to support existing companies but also to attract new businesses and enhance international competitiveness.
