In Calgary, pro-independence campaign signs are equipped with cameras to prevent vandalism. Let Alberta Decide and Pathway to Independence, two third-party advertisers advocating for Alberta’s independence, have embedded messages on their signs saying “Smile! You’re on Camera,” near cameras affixed to streetlights or sign poles. Keith Wilson, a co-head of Let Alberta Decide, explained that the cameras aim to deter vandalism, which has been rampant due to the emotionally charged nature of the independence debate.
The upcoming October referendum in Alberta will include a crucial question about the province’s future within Canada. Both Let Alberta Decide and Pathway to Independence are urging voters to support a referendum on Alberta’s independence. Cory Morgan, the founder of Pathway to Independence, emphasized that these cameras serve as a more practical deterrent than relying solely on law enforcement, especially in areas with limited police presence.
In the event of vandalism, Pathway to Independence plans to share the captured footage on social media to discourage further incidents. Morgan clarified that the cameras are intended for private property, particularly in rural settings where monitoring vandalism is challenging. While the City of Calgary expressed unawareness of these cameras, they noted that such installations on public infrastructure are not permitted.
Wilson, leveraging his legal expertise, assured that Let Alberta Decide’s actions comply with privacy laws. Although the exact number of signs with cameras is unknown, Let Alberta Decide reportedly has approximately 148 signs across Alberta. Wilson affirmed that any footage collected will be handed over to authorities, emphasizing that all actions will be conducted lawfully.
Regarding potential public sharing of camera footage, Wilson stated that the idea had not been considered but emphasized that any disclosure would be in full compliance with the law. Morgan clarified that there was no direct coordination with Wilson on camera placement, though both groups share common volunteer support.
