The prosecution has requested an increase in the maximum penalty for the individual accused of making a bomb threat against the U.S. Consulate in Halifax. Federal lawyer Lee-Ann Conrod informed the court that they are seeking to elevate the penalty for 54-year-old Ali Assakereh to a potential life sentence due to the alleged terrorist nature of the offense under the Criminal Code. Although a life sentence may not be pursued, the prosecution aims to have the option of imposing a penalty exceeding the current maximum of 14 years.
Assakereh is charged with placing a propane tank and flammable substances in his vehicle and parking near the consulate on August 10, prompting evacuations in a significant part of downtown Halifax. Additionally, he faces provincial charges of uttering threats and public mischief, which federal prosecutors are pursuing on behalf of the province.
The prosecution’s move to seek a longer penalty signifies a serious stance against the accused individual’s actions. The case remains under legal proceedings as the authorities work towards ensuring accountability for the alleged threat incident.
