The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) has affirmed that there are no intentions to change its ownership structure or sell the league. Despite ongoing investigations and changes in Mark Walter’s sports portfolio, Stan Kasten, a member of the PWHL’s advisory board, assured that the governance of the 12-team league will remain consistent.
Mark Walter, a prominent Chicago-based billionaire, who holds interests in various sports teams through TWG Global Holdings, is reportedly divesting parts of his sports empire amidst federal probes into loans involving his insurance companies and businesses associated with him. However, Kasten emphasized that the ownership of the PWHL is set to continue with its long-term vision of establishing a sustainable and thriving league.
Walter, known for his ownership stakes in sports franchises such as the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Lakers, Chelsea, and others, recently agreed to a notable sale of the Los Angeles Lakers for a record-breaking sum. While Walter is cooperating with investigations related to his businesses, the PWHL remains unaffected by these developments.
The league, which has subsidiaries in Toronto and Vancouver, welcomed outside investors Kilmer Sports Ventures and Ilitch Sports and Entertainment earlier this year. The involvement of external investors marked a significant milestone for the PWHL, reflecting the league’s growth and potential.
Founded in 2022 by Mark Walter and his wife Kimbra Walter, the PWHL has rapidly expanded, with plans to introduce new franchises in Hamilton, Detroit, San Jose, and Las Vegas. The league’s commitment to growth and inclusivity has garnered support from fans and stakeholders alike.
As the PWHL embarks on its journey to further expansion and development, stakeholders express confidence in the league’s future prospects. Kasten, reiterating his faith in the league’s trajectory, emphasized the collective pride in the league’s achievements and its promising outlook moving forward.
In light of recent speculations, Kasten also clarified the status of the Los Angeles Dodgers, affirming that the franchise is not up for sale and reiterating their focus on achieving success on the field. Walter’s significant role in the acquisition of the Dodgers in 2012 underlines his influence in the sports industry, particularly in Major League Baseball.
