“RCMP Investigates Anomalies in P.E.I. PC Party Donations”

Police in Prince Edward Island are currently examining documents that contain what Elections P.E.I. has described as anomalies in donations made to the ruling Progressive Conservative Party. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has confirmed receiving the said documents from Elections P.E.I. and is in the process of determining if further actions are necessary.

Notably, on Elections P.E.I.’s webpage dedicated to election contributions, a link pertaining to the PC Party’s 2025 contributions directs to a PDF document stating that the contributions are under investigation and will be published promptly.

According to CEO Tim Garrity, Elections P.E.I. conducts an annual internal audit upon receiving contribution documents from registered political entities. In cases where discrepancies or irregularities are detected, the documentation is forwarded to both the RCMP and the Crown attorney for review.

Garrity emphasized that the request to assess the documents is independent of any other ongoing investigations. When prompted by CBC News regarding the frequency of transferring documents to the RCMP for further scrutiny, Garrity responded via email, stating that any findings warranting attention are channeled through the RCMP and subsequently to the Crown’s office.

A statement from the PC Party conveyed that Elections P.E.I. pinpointed three key issues during its audit process:

– Disclosure of 2025 contributions was one day delayed.
– Funds were obtained from an individual in Nova Scotia through a fundraising dinner ticket purchase, which were later refunded.
– Seven contributions were identified by Elections P.E.I. as exceeding limits, inclusive of concerns regarding contributions from members of the same household and the improper classification of a leadership contribution as a party contribution.

The PC Party asserted that their 2025 contributions underwent scrutiny by an independent auditor and received an unblemished audit, indicating compliance with accounting standards. The identified issues were highlighted by Elections P.E.I. through a separate compliance review procedure, according to the PC Party statement.

Furthermore, the PC Party emphasized that their fundraising activities involve contributions from 387 donors through various events and initiatives. They highlighted the volunteer-driven nature of their fundraising efforts across Prince Edward Island, noting that contributions are processed through multiple channels before being reported in adherence to the Election Expenses Act.

Progressive Conservative Party officials affirmed their full cooperation with Elections P.E.I. throughout the investigation. They disclosed efforts to enhance their reporting protocols to mitigate similar issues in the future, such as centralizing financial administration components, reinforcing reporting frameworks, and implementing standardized operational procedures to ensure compliance and prevent recurrence of such issues.

The party opted not to provide additional comments while the review is ongoing.
