“Record Numbers: Detroit Free Press Marathon Attracts 30,000 Runners, Including High Canadian Turnout”

The Detroit Free Press Marathon is gearing up for its largest race weekend ever, with an estimated 30,000 participants, including a record number of Canadian runners, as per race director Aaron Velthoven. The annual event spans from Friday to Sunday, with the primary marathon and half-marathon races set for Sunday morning. Velthoven mentioned that registration sold out rapidly, marking the quickest sellout in the marathon’s history and reflecting an unprecedented level of demand. This year’s turnout of nearly 30,000 runners signifies a 20% increase compared to the previous year.

Among the participants are close to 3,000 Canadians, with around 1,000 hailing from Windsor, making it a significant contributor to the event. The marathon course, which is international, guides runners from Detroit over the Ambassador Bridge into Windsor before returning to the U.S. through the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. Additionally, the Windsor route this year will include a tour around City Hall Square and along Ouellette Avenue.

Velthoven emphasized the immense support that Windsor provides to the runners, with enthusiastic crowds along the route being a key highlight. Windsor local Derek Schlueter, who is set to attempt his first full marathon after previously completing the half-marathon twice, emphasized the unifying power of running in bridging communities amidst political tensions between Canada and the U.S. He highlighted the emotional impact of the marathon, especially when crossing into Windsor, where the supportive spectators create a memorable experience for the runners.

Schlueter expressed his excitement and nerves for the upcoming marathon, underscoring the importance of self-belief instilled through months of training. For him, running transcends borders and unites people in shared experiences of struggle, laughter, and joy. As he gears up for the challenge, Schlueter’s focus remains on embracing the journey and affirming his place among fellow runners. Velthoven echoed the sentiment, looking forward to witnessing the runners achieve their goals and experiencing the unparalleled energy and emotion of the event firsthand.
