“Rising Theft & Damage Plague Prince Edward Island Farmers”

Farmers in Prince Edward Island are facing increased damage and theft, compounding the challenges they already encounter due to high operational costs. Pat McIver, a farmer in Newton, discovered missing wires and cut hydraulic hoses on his carrot harvester, requiring nearly $10,000 in repairs. Despite the setback, McIver remains optimistic about getting the machine back in working order, albeit acknowledging the disruption it causes during the busy harvest season.

Expressing his frustration on social media, McIver offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the damage. He shared that other farmers in his region and across the island have also experienced similar incidents, with thieves targeting minimal amounts of copper, which may be challenging to sell.

Insp. Shaun Coady of the P.E.I. RCMP reported six cases of farm equipment damage, primarily in the Prince County area, seemingly linked to attempts to steal copper wire. Coady emphasized the importance of security measures such as installing cameras and parking equipment in well-lit areas to deter criminal activities.

McIver highlighted the escalating costs for farmers, including rising fuel prices, emphasizing the need for increased security measures like surveillance cameras on farms. He stressed the challenges faced by farmers in sustaining their operations, underscoring the vital role they play and the support needed to combat crime in the agricultural sector.
