Legions nationwide, traditionally frequented by veterans, are now actively reaching out to younger Canadians like Hannah. This inclusivity drive includes innovative events, affordable dining options, and a welcoming atmosphere. To commemorate the Royal Canadian Legion’s 100th anniversary, first-time members are being offered free memberships across the country.
Notably, Legion volunteers stress that military background is not a prerequisite for participation. Many individuals, like Hannah, feel a personal connection to the military through family members’ service, fostering a sense of belonging and nostalgia.

Despite recent closures of some Legions due to financial challenges, others, like the Bala Legion in Muskoka Lakes, Ontario, have successfully transformed their operations. Facing near closure a decade ago, the Bala Legion now offers affordable dining, concerts, and open access to all community members. Plans are in motion to develop affordable housing units on their premises to ensure long-term sustainability.
