A pair of investigators from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary were honored with the prestigious Award of Excellence at the Canadian Police Association’s biennial conference in British Columbia. Constables Nadia Churchill and Tara Molloy were recognized for their exceptional efforts in the investigation that led to the arrest and conviction of Markus Hicks, a teacher and volleyball coach who utilized deceptive methods and multiple online identities to exploit and harm young men.
Following a report in 2023, police initiated an investigation into Hicks after a man revealed that his son’s friend had been enticed to Hicks’s home through the messaging app Snapchat. Subsequent warrants led to the discovery of numerous computers and phones, revealing 24 social media accounts linked to Hicks. These accounts were used to exchange inappropriate content with young men, with an app on the devices enabling voice alteration to mimic a woman.
The investigation uncovered a significant amount of potentially illicit images and videos involving minors. Some individuals depicted in the material were confirmed to be under 18 at the time, while others were deceived into visiting Hicks’s residence believing they were meeting a woman for sexual encounters.
Due to publication bans, the identities of those who shared their encounters with Hicks cannot be disclosed, but many were students or individuals who placed trust in Hicks due to his authority as a teacher, coach, or referee. Police estimate there are up to 35 complainants, ranging from 12-year-olds to adults at the time of the incidents.
Constables Churchill and Molloy were commended for their unwavering dedication, professionalism, and integrity throughout the investigation. The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Association praised their commitment to the case and the impacted individuals, recognizing their efforts on a national level.
Hicks, who received an 18-and-a-half-year prison sentence in April, is appealing the verdict, claiming it was excessively severe.
