Samsung has revealed its latest lineup of innovative foldable smartphones, potentially posing a challenge for Apple.
The tech giant from Korea introduced three new devices, led by the brand-new Galaxy Z Fold 8, featuring a completely revamped appearance. Unlike previous Fold models with a tall cover screen and square main panel, Samsung has opted for a shorter, wider “passport-style” design. This design choice may seem unconventional when closed, but it offers a practical layout when unfolded.
The device boasts a spacious 7.6-inch display that resembles a compact tablet more than a traditional smartphone, catering to activities like streaming movies, binge-watching shows, and mobile gaming.
The launch holds significance as Apple is anticipated to debut its first foldable iPhone later this year, with rumors hinting at a similar radical redesign. Samsung seems to have taken the lead in this aspect over its major competitor.
Apart from design, Samsung is also setting new standards in other areas. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is the thinnest and lightest Fold iteration yet, weighing just 180g. It features an enhanced hinge for increased durability and reduced long-term damage risks.
The device’s expansive display is equipped with Vision Booster technology and an anti-reflective coating for enhanced visibility under bright sunlight. It is powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor and a 4,800mAh battery that can be rapidly charged to 63% in 30 minutes.
The inclusion of a dual-camera system delivers satisfactory photography capabilities, while Gorilla Glass protection guards against scratches and accidental impacts. Samsung has integrated its latest Galaxy AI tools for improved photo editing, productivity functions, and enhanced search capabilities.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is priced starting at £1,699 and is currently open for pre-orders. In contrast, Apple’s anticipated foldable iPhone is expected later in the year and may exceed £2,000 in price.
In addition to the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Samsung has introduced the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, resembling last year’s Fold 7 in appearance but featuring upgrades like the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip and a significant camera enhancement. The device’s rear camera system now hosts a 200MP main sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide lens, and a 10MP telephoto camera, promising improved low-light photography and 8K video recording.
The Fold 8 Ultra also incorporates a new Flex Titanium hinge and a redesigned display structure for enhanced strength and aesthetics, reducing the crease visibility. A larger 5,000mAh battery ensures prolonged usage and can reach a 67% charge in about 30 minutes, with the device starting from £1,899.
Completing the series is the Galaxy Z Flip 8, retaining Samsung’s popular clamshell design while becoming slimmer and lighter than previous iterations. The external cover display has been upgraded, and the device offers improved performance, a reinforced aluminium hinge, and enhanced camera features.
