Saskatchewan’s newest police force recently announced a temporary halt to their plans of establishing a SWAT unit. Minister of Community Safety Michael Weger issued a statement directing the Saskatchewan Marshals Service to pause the formation of a specialized response team. This decision comes after a call for bids was made to equip the proposed tactical unit with various tools and gear, including sniper rifles, hydraulic breaching tools, thermal cameras, night vision goggles, ballistic helmets, shields, and long-range acoustic devices.
Premier Scott Moe expressed his lack of awareness regarding the bid request earlier this week, prompting the government to reassess the situation. Subsequently, Minister Weger confirmed that no equipment would be procured for the unit at this time. Instead, the focus of the Marshals Service will shift towards fostering partnerships with the Saskatchewan RCMP, Municipal, and First Nations police forces to enhance community safety.
Established in May 2025, the marshals were tasked with assisting other law enforcement agencies in combating rural crime, gang activities, and drug-related offenses. Additionally, they were given the responsibility of apprehending high-risk individuals with outstanding warrants.
