Carter Yakemchuk’s inaugural goal of the season secured the Ottawa Senators’ triumph over the Philadelphia Flyers with a final score of 2-1 during Thursday night’s game. Yakemchuk’s crucial power-play goal broke the deadlock with just seven minutes left in the regulation period, leaving the Flyers still in pursuit of their first win this season.
The only Flyer to find the back of the net against Linus Ullmark was Philadelphia’s Matvei Michkov. Ullmark, making 29 saves, put up a solid defense. On the other end, Joseph Woll, with 24 saves, guarded the net for Philadelphia.
Thursday’s game signaled the beginning of a demanding schedule for the Flyers, with three games scheduled within a span of four nights. Despite having four power-play opportunities in the opening period, the Senators only managed five shots on goal during those man-advantage situations.
The scoring opened on an even playing field when Ottawa’s Nick Cousins redirected a Tyler Kleven shot past Woll midway through the first period. However, William Eklund had to exit the game in the first period following a collision with Simon Benoit against the boards. Eklund, favoring his left leg, needed assistance off the ice and did not return to the game.
Philadelphia managed to level the playing field with a power-play goal in the second period. Despite Ullmark’s efforts to block Trevor Zegras’ shot, the puck slipped through his pads, allowing Michkov to nudge it over the goal line. Michael Bunting made his debut for the Flyers after joining the team on Tuesday, while Ottawa’s defenseman Hoyt Stanley marked his NHL debut.
