Fall marks the season when many residents of Prince Edward Island prepare to return to school, including children, teenagers, and seniors. The Seniors College of P.E.I. has launched its website featuring approximately 140 classes covering a wide range of subjects such as art, fitness, dance, and finance. Individuals aged 50 and above can register for unlimited classes throughout the year by paying a fee of $170.
Monique Lafontaine, a student and instructor at the seniors college, shared her experience with Island Morning host Mitch Cormier, mentioning that the diverse class offerings sometimes lead her to enroll in multiple courses. Apart from acquiring knowledge, Lafontaine highlighted the social aspect of joining classes, emphasizing the opportunity to meet new people.
The Seniors College environment is described as pressure-free, devoid of grading systems. With popular classes having waiting lists, students can opt out if a particular class doesn’t suit them, enabling others to take their place. Classes are scheduled from October to May, reflecting a traditional academic calendar with a break during the summer months to enjoy the Island’s summer offerings.
Registration for classes commences on September 2 at 9 a.m., with the recommendation to pay the fee in advance due to high demand for certain courses. Lafontaine likened the class selection process to a buffet, mentioning unique offerings like LovDogs 101 and Brews and Bubblies. LovDogs 101 covers topics such as dog breeds, veterinary care, and walking safety, while Brews and Bubblies allows students to explore and sample various beverages.
The inclusive and supportive atmosphere at the Seniors College fosters a sense of camaraderie among participants, with a shared goal of learning and socializing. Another noteworthy class available is Suddenly Single, designed to assist individuals in navigating the complexities of managing affairs after the loss of a partner or spouse. Lafontaine, who is currently experiencing this situation, emphasized the emotional challenges and practical tasks that arise in such circumstances.
