However, while 200,000 condoms were handed out at the Paris Summer Games in 2024, only 10,000 were distributed at Milano Cortina this year, even though there were approximately 10,500 athletes in Paris and just under 3,000 in northern Italy for the current event.
An anonymous athlete revealed to Italian newspaper La Stampa that the condom supply ran out in just three days, with assurances of more to come, though the timeline remains uncertain.
In an effort to curb off-camera activities, Olympic organizers have introduced so-called ‘anti-sex’ beds, featuring a reduced cardboard design. Despite these measures, reports suggest that the initiative has not been effective in deterring athletes.
This shortage of condoms is not a new occurrence. Organizers at the Sydney 2000 Olympics had to order an additional 20,000 condoms after exhausting their initial allocation of 70,000.
The potential outbreak of a sexually transmitted infection would present a significant challenge for the Games. Athletes arriving in Milan were reminded of the importance of prioritizing health and exercising caution.
