“Sleeping on Stomach Linked to Chest Pain Risk”

A cautionary message has been issued by a healthcare professional regarding a specific sleeping posture that could lead to a painful chest condition. In a video posted on TikTok, Doctor Suraj Kukadia emphasized the importance of avoiding a particular sleeping position due to potential health risks.

This warning came after another TikTok user shared advice from her hospital bed, urging viewers not to sleep on their stomachs. Dr. Kukadia, also known as Dr. Sooj online, highlighted the risk of developing costochondritis, an inflammation at the junction where the ribs meet the breastbone.

Costochondritis, as described by the NHS, can cause severe chest pain, especially during movement or breathing. Dr. Sooj clarified that the condition involves irritation and inflammation of the cartilage connecting the ribs to the breastbone, resulting in sharp, stabbing chest pain that worsens with chest pressure, twisting, or deep breathing.

According to Dr. Sooj, sleeping on the stomach can exacerbate costochondritis as it compresses the chest for extended periods, leading to irritation of the rib and cartilage joints. Poor posture and heavy lifting during the day can further contribute to the development of this condition.

Fortunately, costochondritis is treatable. Dr. Sooj explained that the treatment primarily involves rest, anti-inflammatory medication if suitable, and gentle stretching of the chest wall while avoiding positions that put pressure on the chest.

Experts from Amerisleep support this advice, recommending individuals with costochondritis to refrain from sleeping on their stomachs. Instead, they suggest sleeping on the back or side, as long as it is comfortable.

The NHS states that costochondritis may cause sharp pain in the front or side of the chest, which can worsen during certain activities. If costochondritis is suspected, the NHS advises contacting 111 for medical evaluation to rule out more serious conditions.

In case of sudden chest pain, individuals are urged to call emergency services immediately, as these symptoms could indicate a heart attack.
