This Thanksgiving, a restaurant in St. John’s is offering a unique dining experience that combines Newfoundland and Labrador cuisine with Caribbean flavors. Chef Angeletta McKenzie of Javianna’s Caribbean Cuisine has decided to keep her restaurant open on the holiday for the first time.
Catering to both Canadian clients accustomed to traditional Thanksgiving meals and diverse immigrant clients with varied culinary traditions, McKenzie has crafted three different Thanksgiving menus. One option features a classic Newfoundland and Labrador-style dinner with roasted turkey, savory dressing, glazed ham, and assorted vegetable side dishes.
The second menu, named Island Thanksgiving, includes jerk chicken, glazed ham, mac and cheese, rice and peas, and other Caribbean-inspired dishes. The third offering, the island to iceberg feast, combines elements from both culinary traditions in a fusion style.
Acknowledging that not everyone has a large gathering for the holiday, McKenzie also offers single-serving meal packages. Born in Jamaica and now a Canadian citizen residing in Newfoundland and Labrador, McKenzie expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from the local community, with patrons traveling long distances to dine at her restaurant.
While Thanksgiving celebrations are not common in Jamaica, McKenzie highlighted the adaptability of Jamaican people due to their exposure to North American holidays. Despite not cooking Thanksgiving meals at home, she and her family enjoy traditional Jiggs’ dinner.
In conclusion, Javianna’s Caribbean Cuisine is providing a cross-cultural Thanksgiving experience that celebrates diversity and brings together the best of Newfoundland and Caribbean culinary traditions.
