A Food Basics store will take over the location of a Metro grocery store in Ottawa’s South Keys area this autumn, leading to the displacement of numerous staff members. Metro Inc. stated that the conversion to a Food Basics store is aimed at better serving the community’s needs. The decision came as a surprise to employees at the Southgate Metro, with a long-time employee, Justin Braganza, expressing shock at the closure announcement made by management in May. The company cited local market conditions and customer demands as the primary reasons for the change.
Despite assurances from Metro about job opportunities at the new Food Basics store, some employees like Braganza remain uncertain about their future, particularly concerning job roles that may not align with their current positions. The United Food and Commercial Workers union negotiated enhanced options for affected workers, including severance benefits and potential job placements at the new store. However, questions have been raised regarding the legitimacy of Metro’s claim of a work shortage and potential anti-union behavior, which could lead to legal challenges.
While the union and the employer may reach settlements to resolve such disputes, the confidentiality of these agreements often prevents public disclosure. Braganza lamented the impact of the store closure on the close-knit relationships among staff, highlighting the challenges faced by workers in such situations where they feel their rights are limited.
