Additionally, Assad’s maternal cousin Atef Najib, who was found guilty of overseeing a violent crackdown in Daraa that triggered the uprising and subsequent civil war, was also sentenced to death in the same case.
Atef Najib, a former Syrian army brigadier general, who was later detained and is one of the highest-ranking officials to face trial, was accused of overseeing the torture of prisoners during his tenure as head of the political security branch in Daraa province under Assad’s rule in 2011. This period saw a crackdown on teenagers who had expressed dissent against the government, sparking widespread protests and ultimately leading to the civil war that culminated in Assad’s removal through a rebel offensive.
Najib’s victims, including individuals who were teenagers at the time of the crackdown, were present at the courthouse during the sentencing. Their sentiments expressed a sense of closure and justice served for those who suffered during the tumultuous events of 2011. After the fall of the regime in December 2024, Bashar Assad and his brother Maher sought refuge in Russia, where they were granted political asylum. Efforts are now underway by Syria’s new leadership to secure their extradition from Russia.
