The government of Newfoundland and Labrador aims to ensure that residents of Labrador receive advantages from the province’s proposed multibillion-dollar energy agreement with Quebec. To achieve this goal, a new team has been established with three members of the provincial legislature tasked with overseeing opportunities for the region. The team is led by Labrador Affairs Minister Lela Evans (Torngat Mountains), alongside Progressive Conservative MHAs Joe Power (Labrador West) and Keith Russell (Lake Melville).
Collaboration between the public utility companies of both provinces has led to plans for multiple energy projects along the Churchill River. However, concerns have been raised by Mayor Bert Pomeroy of Happy Valley-Goose Bay regarding the need for support to accommodate the influx of workers expected for these projects, affecting housing, healthcare, and related infrastructure in the community.
The newly formed Team Labrador will actively engage with Indigenous governments and organizations, municipalities, community leaders, businesses, and various stakeholders across Labrador. Keith Russell emphasized the importance of early planning and listening to feedback from all involved parties to address the challenges and opportunities stemming from the Churchill River developments, extending beyond the project sites to impact central Labrador communities.
In a separate development, Lisa Dempster, Labrador’s only Liberal MHA, questioned the absence of representation from the Cartwright-L’Anse au Clair district on Team Labrador. She seeks clarification on how the team will utilize the feedback gathered from Labradorians and whether they possess the authority to act on that feedback effectively.
The efforts of Team Labrador will also contribute to shaping the province’s northern strategy, ensuring that the economic benefits from the energy agreement are maximized for the region’s prosperity.
