Citizens expressed doubts about the government’s ability to oversee an industry expected to invest heavily in Alberta. Craig Paterson, a local lawyer, was surprised by the turnout at the event and highlighted concerns about water consumption and community well-being. He remained undecided about the benefits and drawbacks of data centers.
Challen Gladman, an advocate against AI data centers, voiced strong resistance along with a group opposing the facilities. She criticized the potential short-term economic gains and emphasized the long-term negative effects on communities. Others raised issues about personal data privacy, global surveillance, and job displacement due to artificial intelligence.
Glubish addressed questions about the environmental impact, regulations, and cleanup responsibilities of data center sites. He assured that the government would enforce the polluter-pays principle and emphasized responsible use of AI technology. Despite the challenging atmosphere at the town hall, Glubish acknowledged the territory’s history and treaties in response to a request for a land acknowledgment.
