A teenager who admitted to the murder of 15-year-old Reese Stanzel near Perth, Ontario, has been given a 10-year sentence in custody and under supervision. Stanzel’s body was discovered in a wooded area close to Perth in October 2024. The individual was 16 years old when apprehended, and their identity remains shielded by the Youth Criminal Justice Act. They pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in November of the previous year. The sentence entails six years in intensive rehabilitative custody followed by four years of supervised custody within the community. Both the prosecution and defense jointly proposed the 10-year term in July, which is the maximum allowed for first-degree murder according to the relevant legislation. Having already spent over 600 days in detention, the teenager will receive credit for one year served.
