Sinner, who has been inactive since winning his second consecutive Wimbledon title recently, also withdrew from the National Bank Open in Montreal last week. The 24-year-old Italian, boasting five Grand Slam victories and aiming to clinch a French Open title for a career Grand Slam, made the announcement through a statement from tournament officials. In the statement, Sinner mentioned that despite efforts by his medical team, his right knee issues prevent him from being competition-ready, expressing regret over missing the Cincinnati tournament and setting his sights on preparing for the upcoming U.S. Open.
This withdrawal comes shortly after Carlos Alcaraz also decided to skip the Cincinnati event due to an ongoing wrist problem. Consequently, fans attending the men’s singles matches in Cincinnati will miss the opportunity to watch the top two players in action. Sinner, who triumphed in Cincinnati two years ago and then went on to win the U.S. Open, will not be defending his title this year. Instead, the spotlight will be on Alcaraz, who claimed victory over Sinner in last year’s U.S. Open final and will strive to retain his title when the tournament commences on August 30.
