A man from Toronto has been sentenced to 22 years in prison without parole for the murders of two young women at a house party in Fort Erie, Ontario. Superior Court Justice James Ramsay highlighted the perpetrator’s history of violence and firearms-related crimes, as well as the devastating impact on the victims’ families.
The victims, Christine Crooks, 18, and Juliana Pannunzio, 20, were fatally shot during a birthday celebration in Fort Erie in January 2021. The convicted individual, known as rapper El Plaga, was found guilty by a jury earlier this year.
During the sentencing hearing, family members shared emotional victim impact statements, expressing their profound loss. The court was informed that the perpetrator, in a relationship with Crooks, engaged in a dispute with her at the party, resulting in her being shot multiple times.
The judge revealed that the second victim, Pannunzio, was targeted by the assailant due to a belief that she might report the incident to the authorities. The Crown lawyer described the killing as “cold and calculated,” with Pannunzio being shot in an “execution-style” manner.
Ramsay emphasized the perpetrator’s disregard for life and his troubled upbringing in a gang-infested area. The individual, with a criminal past involving violence and firearms offenses since his teenage years, was deemed as a danger to society.
Despite the automatic life sentence for second-degree murder in Canada, the parole eligibility is determined by the judge. The prosecution argued for a 25-year minimum before parole consideration, while the defense sought 18 years. Ultimately, the judge set the parole eligibility at 22 years.
The victims’ loved ones described the profound impact of the tragedy, with Juliana’s family expressing enduring grief and sorrow. The court heard heartbreaking testimonies from family members, reflecting on the irreplaceable loss and the void left by the tragic deaths.
The perpetrator chose not to address the court during the sentencing hearing, displaying a lack of remorse as he was escorted out of the courtroom. The victims’ families, left shattered by the senseless killings, continue to grapple with the lasting trauma and devastation caused by the violent act.
